Split System Air Conditioners

The most popular aircon in Australia: one outdoor unit, one indoor head, heating and cooling for a single room or open-plan space. Here's how to size one properly — and how government rebates cut the price.

What Size Split System Do I Need?

Sizing is the decision that matters most. Undersized units run flat-out and chew power; oversized units short-cycle and dehumidify poorly. As a rule of thumb for typical Australian homes with standard ceilings:

Room sizeRecommended capacityTypical rooms
Up to 20 m²2.0 – 2.5 kWBedroom, study, small office
20 – 30 m²2.5 – 3.5 kWLarge bedroom, small living room
30 – 45 m²4.2 – 5.0 kWLiving room, master suite
45 – 65 m²6.0 – 8.0 kWOpen-plan living/dining
65 – 90 m²8.5 – 9.4 kWLarge open-plan areas

Adjust up for high ceilings, big windows, west-facing rooms or poor insulation, and down for well-shaded, well-insulated spaces. An accredited installer will do a proper heat-load assessment as part of your rebate quote.

Star Ratings and Why They Decide Your Rebate

Every split system sold in Australia carries a Zoned Energy Rating Label showing separate heating and cooling stars for your climate zone. Under the rebate schemes this isn't trivia — the more efficient the unit, the more certificates it generates, and the bigger your upfront discount. A 7-star unit can attract a substantially larger rebate than a base 2.5-star model, often narrowing the price gap between budget and premium systems to very little.

  • Reverse cycle (heating + cooling) is required — cooling-only units don't qualify
  • The model must appear on the relevant scheme's approved product register
  • Inverter technology is standard on all rebate-eligible units

What a Split System Costs After the Rebate

Installed prices vary by capacity, brand and the complexity of the install, but rebates change the maths significantly. In Victoria, replacing an old electric heater with a high-efficiency split attracts a strong VEU discount with just a $200 co-payment on small non-ducted units. In NSW, the ESS discount applies to new installs as well as replacements. In SA, concession card holders can have quality 7-star splits installed from a few hundred dollars under REPS.

FAQs

What size split system for a 4x4 bedroom?
A 16 m² bedroom is comfortably handled by a 2.0–2.5 kW unit. Going bigger doesn't cool faster in a meaningful way — it just costs more to buy and cycles inefficiently.
Is a bigger split system better?
No. An oversized unit reaches temperature too fast, switches off before properly dehumidifying, then restarts repeatedly — wearing components and wasting power. Correct sizing beats oversizing every time.
Do all split systems qualify for rebates?
No — only reverse cycle models that meet each scheme's efficiency benchmarks and appear on the approved product registers, installed by an accredited provider. Higher star ratings earn bigger discounts.
